Grouping people is usually done for statistical purposes, say for example, people who have high speed internet connections. You would place people in this group based soley on the knowledge that they have high speed internet. Stereotyping is when you place people in a group without real knowledge about them, but rather, on the inference that they belong there. Stereotyping is also usually done out of ignorance, and is usually, but not always, done in a negative frame of mind. For example, white people can't dance, black guys can play basketball, etc.

Grouping people is fact. Stereotyping is opinion, usually biased.
