Now: Ben Wallace. Guards anyone from LeBron to Shaq. Rebounds, blocks, steals, all his defensive stats soar.

All-time: Bill Russel. He was a 7'2 version of Ben Wallace. And obviously it worked...it won him more rings than fingers.

Ben Wallace is the best defender of today, because of his sheer abilty to box out and to get blocks.

I would say John Stockton, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Hakeem Olajuwon were the best defenders of the 90s. Michael Jordan was also a good defender, but it more well known for his shooting. Dennis Rodman was a good rebounder but never won a defensive player of the year award, though he won several rebounding titles. I don't know much about players before the late 80s, but here is the list of the award winners, since the award was incorporated in 1982.

Well if you need a shut down guard then Bruce Bowen he locks cats up like that. If you need a big man its got to be Big Ben Wallace. And Of all-time it Bill Russel...heck thats why they got him in Boston in the first place. They knew his defense was sick and the offense would come.
