I think Pink Floyd was the greatest but Alan parsons was a close second and definate before his time. Alan Parson for the most unusal.

Yeah Pink Floyd is the bomb no argument there but as far as the BEST. It has to be Earth, Wind, and Fire and the most unusual well that would be Parliament Funkadelic of course.

I was always pretty partial to like, what they nowadays classify as "stoner" and "space rock" such as Black Sabbath, Budgie (the original peformers of "Breadfan," and "Crash Course In Brain Surgery"), Hawkwind, Thin Lizzy, Humble Pie, Steppenwolf, etc.
I also really get a kick out of King Diamond / Mercyful Fate because for being somewhat slightly outside of those two genres, the musical styling, feel, and ambience is definitely remnant of the bands which I've previously mentioned.
It's kind of unfortunate that King Diamond / Mercyful Fate didn't get it together much earlier, because I'd definitely pick them for King's unusually hair-raising falsetto delivery of both bands' repertoires.
Keeping that in mind, I guess I'd vote for Budgie, despite the fact that I'm completely enamored by the fact that Steppenwolf used the phrase "God D*mn" repeatedly in their song "The Pusher" which was very shocking, and probably very offensive during that time in our culture... Heh.
