There are a lot of things to consider. First, the thermostat tells the ac unit when to come on. Perhaps it not working or maybe you need some freon put into your system. You should probably call in a professional to check it out for you.Good Luck! Ask a neighbor or Friend if they know someone who could look at it for you. You never know unless you ask.

How hot is it outside?
Can you turn the thermostat up and get the unit to stop, or does it run regardless of setpoint?
What is the temperature inside?
If you are low on freon or have some other refrigeration problem, your unit will run but will not cool efficiently and will have to run all the time.
If your house is getting very very cool then the unit is working fine but your thermostat has a problem.
If you live in Phoenix, or some other place where its a zillion degrees outside, then a unit that is working perfectly may still have to run all the time to maintain 77 degrees (especially if you have insulation or infiltration problems
Think about whats happening and do a little troubleshooting. If your unit is suspect you will probably have to call The Man. Do-it-yourself home air-conditioning repair is almost impossible thanks to our bizarre legislative response to atmospheric ozone measurements.

first you don/t say if what the house temperature is so I will assume that the house temperature is lower than 77 otherwise that is the reason. Also is the fan running and the compressor or just the fan. which would be a setting problem.
in other words give us more information if you want better answers there are too many variables to answer this question completely

Is the temp in the house going down past 77? If it is then I would guess the thermostat is bad. If not then there is something wrong with the A/C itself. Could be undercharged, clogged, blower is slowly dieing. It is worth getting is checked out by a pro.

BEFORE YOU SPEND A DIME CHECK THE THERMOSTAT! The fan may be in the MANUAL position and if so it will run continuously even tho the air conditioner is cycling on and off. Normally, if the fan is running continuously you cannot hear the A/C cycle on and off. If you switch the fan to AUTO it will cycle on and off with the A/C or furnace.

Turn the temperature up to 80. That should make it cycle on & off all day, instead of staying on constantly. It'll also help the bill stay cheaper too each month.

do you have alot of windows facing the south side, if you do you could put some awning up, so that will help keep the heat out and your air cond. will turn off.

Check the filter, if it's really dirty the air isn't circulating as well as it should so it's working harder and giving you higher electric bills than it should.
