Miles gave Coltrane his break, but Coltrane helped standardized moda jazz and put listeners in touch with "world" music before such a term existed. He was a profound artist, but so was Miles!!!

Miles didn't discover Coltrane. Coltrane was already established and doing great work with Dizzy Gillespie and others. Miles help Coltrane expand into more experimental modes and helped him become who he became.

Anyway, Coltrane is an awesome musician. Did he really "invent" world music? Don't know about that.

Miles definitely did invent new music styles. He helped recreate jazz with Kind of Blue, infact all of music. So, I will go with Miles as being more influential in Jazz and music in general. Without Miles we may not have had Yes or Pink Floyd or other great bands.
