I sort of stink at using makeup to begin with but then when it comes time for a recital I'm pretty sure I look awful. Any tips?

What you want to do is put MORE makeup on than you would normally. Which means more foundation, much more blush, darker lips and darker eyeliner.

My tips - Use black eyeliner, it's great for the stage! Purple works good too. Always use a lipstick a shade or two darker than your costume, red always works great if you don't want to go out and by a bunch of lipsticks! Lots of blush! You want your face just to be a dramatic as your costume, but not so much that all the people see is how your face looks. If all else fails see if a dance store near you has make-up lessons!

Get the book Making faces by Kevyn Aucoin. He was a famous makeup artist and the book has samples of many different styles of makeup application. You can read more about him at wikipedia.com the link is below.

There are step by step instructions on each style. I'm sure you'll find one that suits you.

You can get the book on Amazon for as little as 14.95

I remember that my young daughter was told to wear blue eyeshadow, red blush, and red lipstick. I think the reason you might feel so gawdy is because you are making your face up heavily. It needs to be that way so the audience can see your features. Bummer, but true. To everyone off the stage, you look great!

You also might want to try asking your dance teacher. I know at my cousin's dance school they're all required to have the same brand and color of make up applied in the same way. Each year there's a little clinic on how to apply it so that all the girls look the same.

hehe, i would say, just make it up.
chances are, the audience will be too far away with too much light in front of them to notice anything bad.
when i go on stage, i just get my buddies to do it for me
:)
