The advertising says it was based on a true story but according to a special I saw on TV (History Channel, I think) there has never actually been a race like the one described in the movie. According to that program, the guy and his horse were real but the rest of the story was probably just a story he made up to tell people.

The main character is real. A few books he wrote detail his exploits. However, there is no historical fact supporting the existance of the Arabic horse race. If it has lasted for hundreds of years with the Bedowin (sp) tribes, why is it no longer practiced?

The horse was real. The story is in doubt. Historian haven't been able to find any historical documents or evidence of any kind to back up the story.
