When you put in the Knoppix CD and BOOT from CD, it uses
the default settings. These may, depending on what monitor
and video card you have, open by default the KONQEROR
Web Browser on your FULL desktop screen, so that you
are not in Knoppix, but in KONQUEROR, the Web program.
Close, or shrink Konqueror, and then you will be at the
Knoppix DESKTOP.
Along the LEFT SIDE will be the most common DETECTED
devices such as Floppy, CD and Harddrives.

The FIRST TASKBAR ITEM, is a K wheel. Clicking on it will allow
you to pop up the main menu.

If you want to browse files, in the main menu, choose
UTILITIES
MORE APPLICATIONS
TNEF File Viewer
FILE
OPEN
DEVICES
and this will show all devices, including detected hadrddrives,
and show what is in all the devices.

You can use this method to see what is in non-bootable ( typically
crashed or corrupt ) Windows harddrives.
Note that you are on the WEB as well, if Knoppix detects a live
internet device such as ADSL high speed, so you can SEND
files you need from the harddrive to yourself on another computer
if you cant access them in windows. Handy.

Iff you see NOTHING in a list using these 2 methods, then your
computer's BIOS is not detecting the harddrives in the first
place. You then need to press DEL or whatever to enter the
BIOS on BOOT, and make certain the motherboard is detecting
the harddrive.. Knoppix will see harddrives, partitions, files, and
formats that many other operating systems ignore or " can't "
see, so that if something is not on the list of devices in Knoppix,
you have some other problem...

hope this helps.

When I used knoppix, with the most recent version, I had icons on my desktop by default that linked me too my hardrive. They should be located in a folder /var/sev/ or something with /sev/ in it. Explore around all the folders and it is somewhere. When you see a folder named WINDOWS you have foundit. Install knoppix to your hardrive if you want to use it a lot it runs a lot faster. Use the command knx2hd to install the most recent version this is the one that worked for me. There is a rumor that knx-installer works but it always gave me an error.
