i would like to learn more about Irish people. What do you know about them?

Irish people are a funny lot. We tease the people we love the most (until they cry and are scarred for life) and are nice to the people we hate. We get sunburned easily. There are 2 types of Irish men: the silent, brooding, poetic type who thinks he isn't good enough to live and the loud, brash limerick type who thinks he isn't good enough to live. I like both types.

The Irish people as we know them today are descendants of Celtic tribes that invaded Ireland and the British Isles in antiquity and intermarried with previous settlers. The culture has, of course, been heavily influenced by Roman Catholicism, but this influence has been modified with native Celtic symbolism and culture. Ireland has a bloody and mixed history with the rest of the British Isles, especially England. When the dark ages came upon the Western world after the fall of Rome in the fifth century, much of the learning of the ancients was kept, written down, and stored by Irish monks, being able to do so because they were on the periphery of the maelstrom.
