Well, Studies have shown that life started with a single cell organism. This was figured by the adaptation that they grew to multiple cells which were mammals. So the correct answer would be "The chicken came before the egg.

well....
the modern-day chicken has evolved from a more primivitive bird (much like humans and monkeys have developed from a common ancestor). evolution takes place by the formation of a new species. a new species is formed by a series of gradual genetic mutations that take place over generations.
so there definitely was a point in time where one generation of the bird had not mutated enough to be able to be called a chicken, but the next generation had a new mutation that was sufficient to call the bird a chicken. i.e. the not-yet-chicken bird layed the egg that hatched into the chicken.
so the egg came first. thus proven!!!

In nature, living things evolve through changes in their DNA. In an animal like a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell and a female ovum meet and combine to form a zygote -- the first cell of a new baby chicken. This first cell divides innumerable times to form all of the cells of the complete animal. In any animal, every cell contains exactly the same DNA, and that DNA comes from the zygote.

Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote. These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created. That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken.

Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal, and the zygote cell is housed in the chicken's egg. So, the egg must have come first.

I answered this question in another question already.
Forgetting religion and based mainly on evolution, the eggs were modified from those laid by the early amphibians and reptiles, to create eggs that would hatch into birds, so the egg predated the chicken by millions of years.
Specifically regarding chicken eggs, the chicken embryo is formed before the egg surrounding it is created, so technically, the chicken came first.

the bible cleary states the chicken came before the egg "he fill the sky with birds" chickens are birds. however science states that the egg came first because the first (chicken) egg was born from something not quite a chicken

The chicken came first. But it really depends on how people think about the question.

Egg.

Whatever it was that mutated into the species we call 'chicken' today, already has its chicken gene from the very beginning, hence egg.
