If a baby is born before 20 weeks, it is called a miscarriage. There is very little to no chance that it will survive.
After 20 weeks, there is a slight chance that the baby will survive. At 22 weeks, a baby can be viable outside the womb provided that special equipment in on-hand, and that the baby receives the intensive care that it needs.
24 weeks provides yet a better possibility of survival. After that, each week the baby is in the womb, the better chance that the baby will survive outside of the womb.

With medical advances babies are born earlier and earlier and able to survive. However this does not mean that they do not have serious medical problems. My son was born at 34 weeks and in the NICU for 4 weeks. While there we saw babies as early as 28 weeks but they were having a rough time of it. My son although making to 34 wks still had 2 brain bleeds, multiple strokes , hydrocephalus , apnea , heart problems and BP problems. As a good rule of thumb 34 weeks is the earliest you want to have to deliver but 36+ is far safer.

My son was born at 30 4/7 and he lived for about a year (other problems not just early) and and girlfriend had her baby at 24 weeks and he didn't make it. I think it all has to do with the health care the baby receives and how strong they are. I hope that you never have to deal with early delivery, it takes a lot out of you mentally and physically.

I think the earliest a baby can be born is like 6 months cause my sister was 3 months premature.

It really depends on the baby, but general medical guidelines say about 5.5 months. The later it is, the better chance it has of survival.

Babies are legally viable at 20 weeks but do better the longer they can stay in the womb.
