Surely, they're just asking for trouble. When the constitution was written, they didn't take into account the modern day problems.

If we outlaw all guns, only outlaws will have guns. Do you REALLY want to give crooks that kind of advantage over us law-abiding citizens? Many Patriotic Americans proudly own guns... and that's why no country will even consider invading us! (except for Mexico, of course)

You know, I think when they wrote that they were living in modern times - of that time. And what difference does that make anyway? But to answer the question they put it in so people could have a weapon for defense and a weapon for obtaining food. Did they think that in the future there would be idiots that would kill each other? Well, yes. People killed each other back then as well. However, they didn't have TV and all the entertainment media making it cool to "pop a cap" in someone. Nor did they think that there would be all the crime that we have now and it be glorified to the younger generations. It is not the guns that are the real problem. It is the drugs that are the real problem. If we could figure out how to get rid of the drugs or (God forbid) make them legal and available through government controlled facilities, I truly feel that would lessen the crime. I could be wrong, but I do feel that way.

Well, if they do that, why don't we get rid of freedom of speech, too! Our rights are there for a reason - they are what makes America great, take them away and our country is going to start looking like other countries with limited freedoms and governments with too much power.
When a government takes away a people's right to bear arms the people are defenseless. The government then has all the power in the world - to persecute, execute, and force their citizens to do whatever. Not to mention, then you will be dealing with a black market of illegal guns. You also have to think of crime - when no one is armed but the police/military and the criminals who buy guns on the black market - there will be problems. When citizens are gun owners it makes it a little bit more intimidating to criminals because they don't know who's packing.
What I do think they should do is implement a mandatory gun safety and usage course for everyone who buys a gun. People should have the right to own a gun, but with that they should also be mandated to properly learn to use it.

Well,a modern day problem is we could be attacked and every able person is suppose to respond with their own weapon!! That is why the 2ND Amendment is there.

Whether it is there are not, people will get firearms, just like they got booze during Prohibition!

People who have them legally aren't a problem, and those who don't are like Bush! They care less what the constitution says or doesn't say!

Because it is our basic right to defend ourselves. I'm a military brat and as far back as I can remember we had weapons in our home. And my ex is a Marine. And also owned weapons. Modern day problems do not have anything to do with people owning weapons. It's irresponsiblilty that is to blame for that. Guns do not kill people. People kill people.

And Shmod sweetie. Were you around for 9-11? It was not an invasion exactly. But another country did attack the US. Private citizens owning guns does not deter fanatics that use bombs. There is nothing that is going to deter a fanatical dictator from trying to invade the US if he gets a wild hair up his butt.

The constitution is not a document which permits you do do things, it is to prohibit the government from doing things. Because those who drafted it realized that it is government who are the greatest violators of liberty. And a government should never disarm its populace, especially under the guise of protecting them, it was written in the constitution because we need them to protect ourselves from government, and how could a disarmed populace do so. It was also written that if the government ever becomes destructive to an individuals right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness that it is our right to alter or abolish that government.

What, you think punks and thugs didn't exist in the old days?

The founders knew very well that criminals would use guns; because that was a problem then, too.

We decided (as a country) that a free person has the right and duty to defend himself and those around him. An un-armed person is defenseless against criminals, against foreign troops who might invade, and against a government that might get out of control

What is your reasoning for asking the question?

Frankly, the problem is not with the right to own a firearm, but the NRA fanatics who oppose every kind of sane efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, terrorists, lunatics, etc.

Australia did it to us since John Howard came to power and since then he's taken almost every right we had and I'm sick of it. I agree if you outlaw guns then the only people who will have them are the outlaws. Its a bloody crying shame what happened in Australia so In regard to your question I would answer no its not OK that peoples rights are taken away including the right to own firearms.

So they didn't have crime during the Revolution. Wow what an utopia they must of had. There were times in the settling of this country people were required to carry because of raids, bandits, and other people that wanted to kill them. What has changed? Nothing. The nature of man is the same as it always has been, evil.
