Normally a doctor will allow you get one if you feel that there is a reason to get one. I had one at 10 weeks to find out info about my pregnancy. If you feel there is a reason to get one make sure that you express that to your doctor and they usually go along with you.

I have had four ultrasounds already. My first one I had at around 4 weeks along, because I was getting a lot of pain in my abdomen on the right side. It was noted that I had a cyst of pregnancy on my ovary, which could also be indicative of an ectopic pregnancy. I went back two weeks later to have another ultrasound, which showed a normal pregnancy with the baby developing just as it should be. I then had spotting at 10 weeks, and needed to have another ultrasound then. Again, everything looked all-clear. At 12 weeks I had a nuchal fold scan, which is something my doctor does by routine, and it can detect what a baby's chances of having Down's syndrome is. I am going back for my major (Level 2) scan at 19 weeks. I am also going to be finding out the gender of my baby at that time.
"These days, ultrasounds aren't reserved for problem pregnancies. In fact, most practitioners order a detailed (Level 2) ultrasound routinely at 19 to 21 weeks - mostly as reassurance that everything is going exactly the way it should be (though it can also be performed for diagnostic reasons). And because it's noninvasive and can't harm the fetus or the pregnancy, it's a risk free way to obtain this reassurance.
This ultrasound can:
Cofirm the number of babies you are expecting (one, two or more!)
Locate the placenta
Confirm your estimated date of delivery
Check the baby for any structural problems such as spine defects, heart or kidney problems. Though the ultrasound doesn't detect 100 percent of problems it can be very reassuring.
Also on the plus side for parents, it's fun to get a sneak peek at your baby - and to take home a souvenir photo to start the album with. You can even use the opportunity for some early bonding. But keep in mind that you don't have to have the ultrasound if you don't want one. Just let your practitioner know your decision"

Normally the first sonogram is around 20 weeks. Although if you're concerned, your Doctor can request one at any stage in your pregnancy. I have 2 difficult pregnancies and had sonograms every 2 weeks from week 15 and on.

Some doctors do the first sonogram as early as 8 weeks to confirm dates but if that isn't in qurestion then most will order one around 17-20 weeks gestation. This sonogram should be able to determine gender if the baby cooperates with his/her positioning.

Usually you will have one done at around 20 weeks. They like to wait until most organs are fully formed before so they can make sure everything looks good. It's also usuall too early to tell the sex before then. It is more acurate at 20 weeks then before. Your doctor should have you set one up at your next appointment.

I had my first ultrasound at 9 weeks and then the second at 16 weeks to find out what we were having and to make sure all was going well. Seems like all doctors order them at different times.
