If you elope, are you going to let everyone know when you get back that you are married? That would be important to know when answering this question.

You still get married when you elope, so you still trade rings. Did you mean the engagement ring? That depends on whether or not you get engaged before you elope. Technically, when you decide to run off to elope, that's the beginning of the engagement and hence calls for an engagement ring.

The man just carries it in his pocket (preferably in a jeweler's box), and when the justice of the peace asks for it, he brings it out. The JP will tell him to put it on her hand. She pulls off her engagement ring, if she has one, he slips the wedding ring on her finger, and after the ritual, she puts the engagement ring back.

just get a gold band...wear it on the inside because it's close to your heart.
