Because they don't have to pick them up! Try this--inform your man that ONLY clothes in the basket will get washed! Then do that for a time or two. DO NOT mention it again. AND DO NOT PICK IT UP!!! Steel yourself and just leave it where it is. Just don't wash what is on the floor. Pretty soon, he will be whining for socks, etc. At that time, tell him again that only stuff in baskets gets washed, and that if he wants something right away, he is welcome to wash it himself. I promise this will work. No nagging or yelling, tho. Be very polite and accommodating about always washing what is in the basket. I did this and it only took about 3 weeks for him to start putting his stuff in the basket.

My wife has now put the washing basket on the floor where I like to throw my clothes. It's a compromise that seems to be working for both of us.

My partner puts his clothes in the wash basket but things he's throwing out always go on the floor.

It's true. I also leave my clothes on the floor, but i have an excuse. I like to give my wife Gloria plenty of work to do. I manage to keep her on the go for most of the day by leaving things around and asking her to do things. That way she'll be too busy to leave me for the Italian ice cream van man again. That swine. I could kill him. I came home last spring to find them both in an unnatural position on the snooker table. If I'd had my rifle to hand, i'd have shot him in the buttocks and paraded him around town.
But to return to the point. Gloria has never complained about picking my things up and it's not because she knows she'll get a sound thrashing for it either. I think she's learnt that her place is tidying up after me. I work hard enough dammit.

It doesn't matter to them as much as it does to us! I think most of them grew up with mummy picking up after them so have come to expect their wife/partner to do the same! I don't know if they do it consciously (Thinking it's our role) or subconsciously though!
But i have a cure !!! My husband was the same until i decided i had enough. So i picked up his dirty clothes, shoved them in bin liners (He is in the building trade so his clothes get dirty daily). I did it for 10 days then he asked me where his clothes were, had they been washed because he couldn't find them anywhere. I told him i would have washed them, had they been in the laundry basket, hadn't seen them in it so where had he left them? He told me he'd left them in the bathroom then admitted they were on the floor so i told him that i had had a good clear out, picked up stacks of things and put them in bin liners, ready for the skip. Uou should have seen him !!! 11 PM, in his boxers, rummaging in the bin liners !!! He's been laundry basket trained ever since!

my hubby not only puts the dirty stuff in the basket, he collects it over the house, washes, dries, and puts it away.(sometimes, we both work). He is a good man. Not that men that dont pick up the stuff are not good, but its pretty darn nice:)

that's a good question. i have no idea y my hubby does it. our kids put their dirty clothes in a backet even. i have tried to train him to do it but it doesn't work. he takes his off were ever he is. i hate having to pick up his clothes. i've just now made it so that if he doesn't put them in a basket then they don't get washed. maybe he'll get it when he has to start wearing dirty clothes to work.

You can organize your clothes better if they are on the floor rather than in a basket. If you do piles, then you might have the clean pile, kind of clean pile, definitely not clean pile or something like that. It works!

i have no idea but my bloke does exactly the same and expects me to know if I've washed the shirt he wants! do you think it could be that they don't understand the washing process or how irritating it is to do a load of whites then walk into a room and find items that could have been washed at the same time? just a thought
