Why is it automatically thought that if you are over 18 and living at home you are not indepenendant? My mother and I live in the same house. This is the second and final time due to her health. We purchased a house several years ago so that we could afford to buy what we both wanted. It is no different than having a roommate to me. She has always respected me as an adult and has treated me as such. What is the big deal of "living at home" if it means that you can afford to eat a healthy diet versus eating a diet of generic mac n cheese and day old bread?

Don't let it bother you. I didn't leave home until I was 27, and my parent's loved it. It's not that I wasn't independant, but they were getting on with age, and I was there to help out around the house. I also said that if anyone didn't like it, they could kiss my a**. There is nothing wrong with what you're doing. Appreciate your mother while she's still on this Earth. I've never regretted staying at home for so long, having that chance to give them a hand when they needed it, especially now since they've both passed away. Don't even let it bother you, who cares what other people think. Have a wonderful day............

I don't think living at home when over 18 is as frowned upon as you think. Especially now that it is so expensive to live in most places. I do think that living at home when over 30 is a bit frowned up - at least for men.
However, your situation is different because you and your mom bought the house together - you aren't really "living at home." You and your mother made a concious decision to buy a home together and live together as adults - not as a parent/child where you would have rules like a 15y/o would.

there is nothing wrong with it. Some people assume that you are living off your mom and can't make it on your own. You know better so ignore them and feel sorry for them for being so closed minded and stupid

There's nothing wrong with it...as long as you are independent. I feel my children can stay as long as they want as long as they are taking care of their responsibilities.
