When sleeping I sometimes have horrible nightmares and I try to call out for help, but I seem to go mute. My body vibrates and I open my eyes but I can't even get myself out of bed...my body seems as if it locks. After struggling with this unexplained force I manage to get out of it, but it's frightening.

What could be happening?

What you are experiencing is what is called sleep paralysis. Science doesn't know exaclty why it happens but they know how. We all heard of REM sleep (rapid eye movement). The period of sleep when we are dreaming. Sleep paralysis usually occurs in the "in between" stages of sleep when our mind is still aware but drifting into deep sleep. We get either a feeling of drifting or of the inability to move.

It is perfectly normal and has no magical or spiritual relevance it is just the body reacting to sleep stages. So relax and the next time it happens don't panic and you will wake up easier.

snap! my daughter is 3months and she's the same! I have a soothing motions glider from fisherprice and it rocks forward and backwards and side 2 side so when she's asleep I put her in that and she stays asleep!! also I always make sure she ahs spat her dummy out b4 I put her down as thats when I know she's asleep!! Sometiems she'll scream and cry when in her rpam and if I take her out and hold her she shuts up! Babies r a lot brighter than we give them credit for..your baby knows if he cries long and loud enuff u you will give in and pick him up...I'm the same tho I can't leave her to cry for a long period of time and sometimes its so much asier picking her up as she stops and its quiet lol..have u got a baby carrier? try putting him in that and then he'll fall asleep and you can still get things done :D Also I agree with honey about the swaddling...I always wrap my baby up in a blanket so her arms are by her side and she feels so much safer this way then jst being lay down covered with a blanket..also she has a'snuggle bear' lol its a little bear thats holding a piece of soft blanket and she snuggles into that as she likes the cover close/over (I don't mean completely covering but she snuggles into them)her face P.s. she only does this during the day...Luckily for me she sleep all the way thru the night watever time she goes 2 bed and doesn't wake until bout 6-7am..and she has slept thur since being 2 weeks old lol so I'm kinda blessed at night!!

Its called sleep paralysis and supposedly has to do with astral projection. I have this problem too. I feel an evil presence in the room and I ant move and I cant scream....sometimes I hear voices in my ear or feel something touching me. I have heard that when you are paralized it is because you have been astral traveling and you woke up before your spirit was back in the body or your spirit is aving a tough time getting in the body. It scares me to wake up and cant move but what I do, if Im really scared is I try to just make a muffled noise and eventually I can move my mouth then I can move my whole body. If im not scared I go back to sleep or just lay there until it stops...praying keeps my mind active and feeling comes back again...

Don't worry. A lot of people have experienced what you're talking about. It's refered to as sleep paralysis I think. It can come about at times in your life when you feel that you are "out of control" or "unable to act". Ask yourself:
What is it that I want to say, but can't?
What is it that I am scared of?
What do I wish I could do, but feel like I can't?
If you are able to, tell yourself that you will become aware that you are dreaming while you are dreaming for a few minutes every night before you fall asleep. After a few nights, you will experience a brief period of consciousness during your dream. In other words, you'll know you're dreaming while you're dreaming. In this state, you'll be able to confront whatever it is that is scaring you in your dream. Turn to it instead of running away, seek out help in understanding what you need to know from it instead of fighting/fearing it. Assert yourself! Nightmares are signals from your psyche that something in your life needs to be addressed. The scary things that show up in your dreams are symbols. What do they mean to you? Use your dream as a tool to overcome your fears. Try writing your dreams down in a journal. This can also help you understand what is happening. Once you are able to confront your fear in your dream, the bad dream probably won't happen again. This has worked for me :)

when this happens are you sleeping on your back? this has happened to me since I was 16. It's almost like you have to will yourself to move. It's frightening and I don't know what causes it. It happens mostly when I'm between sleep and being awake. There was a show on SCI-FI channel that tried to explain it. It happens to more people than I thought. All the show did was scare the hell out of me. I make sure I don't sleep on my back and the covers are over my head, ever since I was 16.

the same thing happens to me its like a force keeping me from waking up, something heavy, but at the same time i know i am sleeping n sometimes i see my self sleeping and trying move my hand but can't i don't know how to explain . and when i wake up i feel so tired. it happens to me when i wake up in the morning and fall asleep again. i hate it when it happens, i don't know what it is. i think its a kind of a nightmare but very strange and it leaves you very tired. maybe because u are very tired or stressed so when you fall asleep it is so deep so u have these kinds of nightmares. i hope it goes away.

It is normal I can't remember the name for it, but when you sleep your body turns off part of your nervous system so you wont act out your dreams in reality. Sometimes people awake to fast before the body turns it off, it is a weird feeling and sometimes scary to some people.

I had that experience..luckily only one time..get to a professional hypnotist..they can get rid of that for you. But make sure they have top creditionals, you don't want to leave this for any amateurs. There are many phenomenon that science has yet to explain. there are mystics who could explain this to you. As a witch, I believe in many states of being and I feel that this is a valid place...don't think it is dangerous though and eventually everyone can get out of it so remind yourself of that and maybe e that will help too.

I've had that sensation too, I've even "felt" something holding me down. That was freaky. Glad that when I woke up it was light in my room...no one was there. And I'm glad to know there is a term for it and it happens apparantly quite often. Been a while since my last experience..they are associated with bad dreams for me. Guess I've been having sweet dreams lately :-)

sleep paralysis- it's a natural thing the body does so
you don't thrash around in your sleep too much when you dream you're running or fighting, or yelling.

It can last a little long as you wake up and be pretty scary.
