The easiest way is to go to the local auto parts store. Usually they have a multimeter and are willing to check it out for free. If you can't get there, then use a digital multimeter while it is running on the battery terminals and the voltage should be at least 12v (usually 14v). less than that, the charging system is bad. If you leave it running for awhile then go back and the voltage is low, this also means that there is a problem.

If you've tried the voltage test at the battery and have determined that the charging system isn't working, here are a few things to check.
-The most common problem with that model has to do with the rotor. The charging system isn't powered by a flywheel with permenant magnets. The rotor is an electro magnet. It gets magnetised by brushes.
-Remove the R crankcase cover and check that the brushes aren't worn down. The 2 rings on the rotor that the brushes touch, get dirty from the brushes - clean them. Check for continuity between the 2 rings.
-Turn on the key and check for battery voltage at one of the brushes. The other should have continuity to ground.
So far so good?
-Reinstall the cover.
-To check the stator, unplug the wires going to the stator (3yellow,1black,1white).
-3 yellow wires A,B&C. Should have continuity between A&B B&C A&C. None of them should have continuity to ground.
-With jumper wires, connect + battery to black and ground to white (on the stator side of the plug). Start the bike and rev it while checking the voltage between 2 yellow wires. You shoud get about 150 volts AC current. between A&B B&C A&C.
-If you do get the 150 AC volts, then the regulator/rectifier is probably bad.
-At the reg/rec, check for continuity - green to ground and red to battery.
If you don't know how to use a multimeter or understand what I've written, then iI don't think this is a job for you.
Good luck!

Warm it up and check it with a volt meter. Put the contacts on the battery posts and your read-out should be about 14.5
