They keep one finger stuck in each ear. Do a somersault from the second floor and you'll find so long as you do not remove your fingers you'll be safe.

It will also help you to not hear your legs breaking assuming you land feet first. If you land head first, don't worry, there's clearly nothing in the head region which can get damaged any more than it already obviously is from this question.
