it is probably not the processor or the computer in general. It is more than likely the programs that are starting up with the Operating system. I am assuming that you are running Windows, Home or XP. If you are using Norton Internet Security Suite 2006, this is probably the main issue as it is notorius for making a system's boot time very slow. One way to tell is to start the machine in Safe Mode and see if it is faster. I am sure it will be as Safe Mode utilizes a basic set of software and drivers to just get it going. If you are not familiar with Safe Mode, shut down the computer and upon the restart when you first see the Windows logo screen tap the f8 key until you get a black screen, then select safe mode and see how long it takes from this point on

DO NOT run msconfig. That only messes up your computer. In my experience, it is BEST to use the services. So, do this.

Start > Run > services.msc

turn off stuff that you think shouldn't be on. If you can't find anything there, then, yes, go to msconfig. But, it's always best to start with the services.msc file first.

There could be the fact of the matter that you need to clear up disc space. So, do a defrag. Do everything you can - spyware, virus, defrag, disk cleanup, etc. That should improve performance.

If that doesn't work, at least you know it's "normal"

if it is booting extremely slow you more than likely have far to many things starting with windows. Disable as many of these programs as possible, that is anything you don't use very regularly. also it would be a good idea to run a spyware/adware program because they can cause this same problem. in most cases i've experienced it has been to many programs starting with windows. You can disable them using msconfig, if your scared to mess with that you can go into each individual programs preferences and uncheck the start automatically box.

Go to start > run > msconfig
Click on the start up tab and you will see a list of all the programs loaded when you start windows. Untick any you don't need every time like printer, scanner various software you can always start these when needed by clicking on the icon.
Run spyware checking progs and delete all finds.

thats not that disimilar in time to my sempron3400. however what the others failed to mention is that if you go to the microsoft website and download windows defender (free) you can clean up your start programs using that without the worry of messing up your system as with the otheer config options mentioned.

it may also be worth pointing out that your boot time can be helped (speeded up) by adjusting the amount of space the system allocates to the page file. personally i have about twi9ce as much space reserved for a page file as i have system RAM
system ram is only half the story in windows. ram only keeps your running processes in memmory most other tasks are paged to to your hard disk.
at any time you can run taskmgr.exe to see what programmes are running.
hit start, run type taskmgr.exe in the run command window to see what you have running and to see your CPU and ram usage. amongst other options.

In MSCONFIG on the STARTUP tab, untick any programs you dont need. Click on START > RUN and type MSCONFIG to get there.

As also mentioned check for Malware (adwares and Spywares).

Finally add more RAM into your computer, Windows XP needs about 256MB to run. The more the better.

Try hibernating instead of shutdown.Click start; click turn off computer; hold down shift key (shutdown changes to Hibernate) click hibernate. Start up is as normal but 20 times faster.

That's fine, nothing to worry about. As a computer get's older, it's takes a little longer for it to write to the disk.

that depends on what programs you have starting up when windows loads, spyware protection, virus protection, ms office startup programs, real player, there could be a lot of programs that have to start before windows is done loading
