Although the cornet looks like the trumpet, both horns differ slightly. A lot of people overlook the differences and consider them the same, which is true enough, but the real difference is the fact that the trumpet is a cylindrical instrument and the cornet is a conical instrument. You can barely tell them apart because the shape difference is internal. The cornet is a tapered instrumet like an ice cream cone, where the thickness of the metal is a lot denser at the smaller round and then thins out towards the bell flare, and the trumpet is cylindrical where the thickness of the metal is basically uniform everywhere on the horn. Because bore size and keys can be fixed/changed on both horns, the instrument shape is the only definate thing that distinguishes the cornet and the trumpet.
