Lets just say that the earth reaches the point where the artic icecap melts and the sea level rises 20 feet (and it will within 50 years if we don't control our greenhouse gas emissions--see movie An Inconvenient Truth). What happens from there? Will the earth turn into a Venus-like planet that will heat up uncontrollably?

(serious answers only, please)

Its not Al Gore's opinion-- it is 1000's of scientists with PhD's research! Look past the fact that Al Gore is in the damn movie and open your eyes: Al Gore is just PRESENTING the research not making it up for propaganda like Fox News wants you to believe. Not one scientist disagrees with this inevitable doom to life that could happen as a result of increased greenhouse gas emissions. Only the media and the governments and denying it and you are sadly believing them! Ha!
Are you saying that you are above 1000's of these scientists and you, an ordinary individual, knows what is really happening? I don't think so! Sorry! Get off your high-horse! Read a scientific journal!

He gives free talks but not everyone in the US is seeing them, so why not bring his point to the theater? There is one in every city and most towns

You will never convince everyone by the time they get it it will be to late.Science is based on facts and not on opinion. The fact is that the planet is warming faster than it has in the last 400 years and we are the only difference in the last 400 years. You can still find people that believe that cigarettes don't cause cancer.

#1 science won't save us. It only will prolong the inevetable. Remember that the earth is 4.6 billion years old and "science" has only come on the scene in the past 200 years or so. And while science is amazing, that's not enouogh history for me to put all my eggs in that basket.

#2 I am guessing that if the ice caps melt then the oceans will become less saline (salty). This will first, kill most of the aquatic life. And second, mess up the ocean currents so bad (a factor of salinity and buoyancy) that the earth will then be plunged back into another ice age. Plus the fact that we don't know what effects the ice caps play on the tilt of the earth. What about isostatic rebound?

I am not denying that we are playing a significant role in the destruction of the only place we call home, and I'm doing my part to be a conscience consumer. But the earth will take care of herself. If by destroying the human race and its 1million year existence (if you count the early ancestral apes) it can continue on it's 4.6 billion year history (we are only a tiny cog in the wheel, kinda like humanity as a 24 hour flu bug).

Oh, by the way most species only exist on the planet for about 1 million years before they become extinct.

You ask a leading question..."What happens from there?" implies acceptance of your premise. I do not. I think you should seek scientifically based predictions outside the movie theatre.

Al Gore has spent much of his life seeking election. He simply does not qualify as a reliable source of scientific information - notwithstanding his delusional beliefs to the contrary.

To answer your second question, No. No. Absolutely no!

Once again, the fossil fuel deposits we see today reflect burgeoning plant life, mainly in the Carboniferous Period. Almost all of that carbon came from the atmosphere. The world was certainly warmer, certainly wetter then - but not hostile to human life. The ocean and atmosphere form an extraordinarily stable physical system.

20 feet in 50 years. Not a chance.

Venus. The physics simply won't go there...at least not until the sun swells up fat and red in a few billion years.

well the global temperratures will only increase 5 or 6 degrees and the arctic ice caps will melt and then most of the planet will be underwater

Sorry, I can't take seriously anyone that bases their opinion on "An Inconvenient Truth" everyone knows that it is just propaganda.

What disturbs me is if Gore REALLY wants to get his point across to the American public, why do we have to pay to see it?
