i doubt it. 4 sending offs. 25 fouls and 20 cards, that has to be a record

I'm going to defend the refs a little. The new rules, and pressure by FIFA to really crack down on dirty play was enforced, and I didn't really see any booking that was not on par with the bookings from other matches. In that respect, the refs did fine.
Overall in the World Cup, there have been too many cards. I think FIFA is wrong to tell the refs to just hand cards out like crazy.
In this game, we should blame FIFA, and the dirty play of both sides, not the refs. A game to blame the refs bad calls would be USA vs. Italy or South Korea vs. Switzerland.

I agree, they played dirty to no end. Both sides should be ashamed of the game they just played, what happened to fair play? Netherlands and Portugal were both in the wrong and I'm glad they got the yellow cards, they all deserved them. I was really looking forward for the game because I thought I would be more a fight of skill than drama. Now I want England to win even more because of the immaturity shown by Portugal. They should learn from Ecuador and England. When the game was over they still had a lot of respect for each other.

The referee lost control at the end of the first half and seemed overwhelmed.
Don't be surprised if early in the week the FIFA fairplay committee has some serious sanctions for both teams (I'll be shocked if Figo isn't suspended for his headbutt)
I liked the style of play whistle to whistle, the Scottish league is a rough league with strong hard challenges on almost every play ... we also don't lie around dying afterwords ... we get right back up and take the number... but in this game all the other garbage after the whistle was ridiculous.

Again another great job by the refs,,how many times does this have to happen before something is done. if i heard right there have been over 200 yellow cards , and god forbed i would hate to see how many reds,, i have seen better jobs done by jr high refs, these are grow men,, hey,,if its a late or bad hit, then yes,, they need to get the card,, but this world cup is the worst i have seen, i do not want to see the world cup champion be decided by a ref,, and that is what is happening here ,,so many players have not been able to play because of two yellow, at least 85% should have never gotten a yellow, let the players play,, refs,, do the job your paid to do,

20 cards? Thats almost the whole of both teams. There goes an exaggeration.
And to answer your question. It is a record.
You have to give it to the referee though. He handled the game pretty well and didn't crack under pressure. No referee in the world can stop unprofessional behavior like that without carding players in an attempt to control the match. And he did well into not letting this develop into a full fledged fisted and studs-in-face fight.

Answer is no. I supported portugal before the match but I am shocked at what Figo and the others did(Although Cocu of holland started the fight). Now I hate Portugal and I wish England will beat them in the Semi-Finals.
(But I agree with you. This was the most exciting match in world cup 2006)

Being portuguese I apologise for the excessive roughness. Still, I feel it was a good game. Too bad the dutch have to go home, as they played very well.
Even without two starting players (Ronaldo has 6 days to recover), Portugal has shown more than enough to take on the english.
PS: liss is a moron...

omg i was freaking out so bad during that game.
the annoucers even thought the refs were awful.
what they thought deco did to get his second yellow card? i have no idea. he got pushed over after picking up a dead ball!
im also thrilled portugal won and the game ended. i hope ronaldo will suck it up and play on saturday bc they will need him w/ deco and cositiano (can't spell sorry) not playing, though I think portugal will be fine and beat england.
