Pain is the #1 sign. Laying on the floor or bed check to see if one leg is shorter than the other. In this position, also check to see if the leg rotates inward or outward. These are also signs If a fx hip is suspect, you must go in & have an xray to rule out a fx. I am an RN and have seen many fx's. Hope this helps.

As with most broken bones there will probably be some disfiguration around the site, be it swelling or rednes. It should be painful to put any weight on it, but some people may be able to do so. The best way to tell is with an xray though.

along with swelling and bruising , look at the whole leg in general if the leg or foot is turned slightly inward or at an akward position more then likley it could be broken . of course be sure and get an x ray . Older people that experiance osteo have more brittle bones and is likley to break bones easier .

The only true way is with an xray. Some are able to bear weight when the hip is actually fractured.
