It takes time. An animal becomes a part of your family and you go through the grieving process. It can last months because an animal has no bad points and just loves you unconditionally. I don't know what animal you're talking about but the loss of a dog, for example can be terrible because after a while a dog seems human. Cats have a mind of their own and birds, well I just don't know about them. My friend's daughter has 2 goldfish which she loves. I can't relate to that but that's the way things are. My dog, years ago was run over because he was diabetic and couldn't see properly. He died just before Christmas Eve and it took me ages to get over it.
I'm very sorry.

It taskes a long time because you go through the grieving process. You've lost a pet that was part of your family and he/she leaves a gap in your life.
First of all, my condolances on your sad loss.
You should hang on to happy memories, and talk about your loss to people who will understand, because they've been there. Sadly many people look upon at it as "O it was only a pet" but he/she wasn't to you. He/she was your faithful companion, shared your life, knew you probably better than most of your friends do. And she was always there for you too.
There is no instant remedy, part from talking your feelings through to someone who can relate to them, and time will heal in due time.
Some people experience depressed thoughts following pet bereavement and if you ever did, then you should speak to your GP.
You can also contact Blue Cross who will listen to you, send you leaflets, and literature pertaining to pet loss. Your Vet should have some contacts for you as well. I work with Vets who refer clients to me for both canine behaviour and pet bereavement. So your Vet should offer you the same.

I am suffering the loss of my beloved English Springer Spaniel, who died last week today. I am devastated and i know i will never get over losing her. I love her dearly and she will always be in my heart, mind and soul. I pray she is happy and in a better place now, and that one day we shall both meet again, and live eternally in peace together. I cant suggest any advice as i need advice too. But the fact is, no matter what advice is given, we will never come to terms with our loss, or get over it, and quite frankly i dont want to get over her, cos i want her in my thoughts always and forever.

I don't think you ever really get over a loss of a pet it just gets easier to cope with time.
One of my dogs is now 10 and i dread the day anything happens to him he is my life!
Sorry if you have lost a family pet we are all here with you.

gosh that's sad. you'll never truly be over a sad loss. even with pets. they are members of the family that will not leave your memory, but hold a family funeral to make sure you don't feel guilty about things later.

i dont think you ever do they become not only your pet but your best friend faithfully there for you when your upset they dont answer you back .give you lots of love and do the most funniest things i dont think you really get over them or maybe in time the pain of loosing a pet wont be so hard and then you get on with it but you always remember. it will get easier

I just lost a dog, that was older than me, and was my mom's first dog, so we were devistated. You should let your feelings come out, and eventually, you will tend to be a little bit calmer about the stuation. I am sorry. =(
