I am an independent and I like Romney a lot. He's on my short list of hopefuls along with a couple of Democrats and another Republican, all of whom, surprisingly enough, have very similar views.
Religion has little to do with my decision on who to vote for, because a lot of politicians use religion as a tool to get votes and don't practice the compassion or tolerance that their religion teaches. I am a Christian, but I'd vote for an atheist if I believed that he would do a good job and he was a good person. Too many "Christian" politicians need to learn to "practice what they preach", or, to be more precise, what He preached.

Yes I think it's a distinct possibility that he may at least run. But you are correct that being a Mormon could work against him. It shouldn't but it may. Many so called christian fundamentalist call the Mormon believe system a sect and dismiss it out of hand.
I've seen him on several news programs in the last couple of months and looks like the "feelers" are out to see how the public views him. He works well within a democrat dominated state and gets things done. I know I'd vote him!

I think the fact that he's a member of a cult (Mormonism) would be an issue, one that I'm sure he could not overcome.
Most US citizens will be extremely disturbed to find out about what Mormonism is all about. Most of the citizens here are Christian, and Mormonism is not a Christian religion.
For example, Joseph Smith, the Mormon founder, listened to a voice coming out of a box (ostensibly God's voice) he found in the woods in upstate NY. That conversation is the basis of the Book of Mormon. See? Did I scare you yet?
I kid you not. Look it up. Mitt will never, ever be President.

Mitt Romney will never be president of the us because southern republicans would not like the fact that he is governor of Massachusetts!!! they will have generalizations of him being a John Kerry type of person!! And he is considered a moderate(kinda liberal) republican like ex-Mayor Guiliani of New York. The south would not go for that. I do agree with you that if he runs he could split the republican vote...
