No they don't do a lot for us, apart from being filthy rich on our money, then using tax payers money for things, it's time for them to go, and this country would still rake in the money because people come to see the castles, etc, and they will still be around

God Save the Royal Family, God Save the Queen!!!

Do we need tradition in our lives?
Do we need even a President of the United States?
Do we need any governing body, whether they are the active or purely figure heads?

Only for a very short time was there no Royal Family in English History...under the Lord High Protector Thomas Cromwell, when following the beheading of Charles II England took a whirl at being a republic...they were very quick, some years latter to put Charles son back on the throne following Cromwell's death. For the record, Cromwell was a Puritian...you know, the Mayflower.

As far as cost to the taxpayer goes...do you remember the fire at windsor Castle...it was the Royal Family who footed the bill for the restoration. Monies raised from tours of Windsor continue the work to this day. The taxpayers paid nothing.

When King Edward abdicated for the love of his life, Wallace Simpson, the debate about needing a Royal Family reered its head, and has been popping up every so often ever since. You know how great the Royal Family is here on this site, because almost 25% of the questions I've answered is about the Royal Family.

Yes we need that family, disfunctional at times as it might appear, but I'm sure all families anywhere experiance such turmoil, but in most cases its not heard about as everything the Royal Family does is blown out of the water in proportion to who they are to us.

God Save the Royal Family, God Save the Queen.

Bp. David

Good question.
While I hear somethings like this, I think why do some countries still have Royall family?
It means wasting a lot of taxpayers money and have something so costly without any good reason. The time is changed and nobody (Except of some fogy) doesn't think a Royall family is necessary at all.
Queens and Kings should find a job to earn their money.

Also, tourists can see the palaces better than while Royall family are living there.

This is a strong debate! A lot of people think the royal family are now a waste as all power has basically been handed over to the government. A lot of people think it's a waste of government money to maintain them. However, it is argued the Royal family bring in a significant amount of tourism into the country and therefore the cost of maintaining them is worth it.

Definitely. I personally do not think they cost the British taxpayer that much. When you look at the vast amount of money this spendthrift government of ours have squandered on EU subsidies, hyper-inflated salaries for government ministers, Whitehall mandarins etc, bureaucracy (not forgetting the subsequent cost of implementation) in the NHS (and no sign of improvement whatsoever): compared to that, I think the cost of the civil list to the taxpayer is peanuts. There is no way I would wish this country to become a republic. I mean politicians are oh so corrupt. Would you seriously want any of THEM to be elected as president? (Can you imagine the chaos if people were naive enough to elect somebody like George Galloway?) That would surely spell the end of democracy in this country as we know it. Plus, the monarchy still has a huge following in this country, and any attempt to overthrow it would plunge the country into civil war. Some might say the days of the monarchy are well over, but I say "Over my dead body". I am a monarchist and proud of it. God save the Queen.

We should be proud to be British. Our royal family is the envy of the world, we should be proud of them for all the work they do representing Great Britain and all the charity work they do across the globe. I know I am, but I do think that they should get rid of all the hangers on.

The answer lies with the Britishers, but looking at it from a cost effective point of view - it is too costly! Perhaps the Britishers should have a royalty like that in Norway or Sweden. Less costly, yet 'royal'. And they act more like the ordinary citizen.

Of course, most of the revenue comes from tourists, the royal family brings in tourists, therefore they are useful for something and if we didn't have a royal family, we wouldn't have had that party thing yesterday, that was so weird and funny.

Tourism. For some reason the rest of the world has a fascination with our royal family.

I think an unelected, apolitical head of state is the best option. I would not like to see us have a president as in the USA. Choosing the head of state by election would be a disaster - the media would turn it into a beauty contest and we would end up with has beens or failed politicians or second rate celebrities.

HAY ERIC F ,THE ROYAL FAMILY HAS MORE MONEY THAN THE GOVERNMENT . ALSO WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO GET RID OF THEM ,IF ANYTHING THEY ARE A BIG PLUS FOR THE COUNTRY. THE FIRST THING VISITORS WANT TO SEE IS THE ROYAL FAMILY.
