The mask and cowl was one peice in the series batsuit. WOuld have been very hard to remove it

Remember, the costume was put on them on the pole from Wayne Manor to the Batcave.
They would begin the slide down in civilian clothes, and arrive at the bottom dressed and ready to go.
Using this fact, I would say that he didn't relax in the Batcave because this would have messed up the machine Bruce Wayne built that undresses Bruce and Dick and redresses Batman and Robin. Or Vice-Versa.

Because it was the 60's, man, and the Tv execs at the time probably thought that the viewers at home would get confused if they saw plain ol' Bruce Wayne hanging 'round the batcave. Everyone in the '60's had their place, for Brucie, it was upstairs in "Stately Wayne Manor"!!!
