For Windows XP there is a built in Back up tool which we call system restore.

Click on start=select All Programs = Accessories = System tools = select system restore and then follow the wizard select the date that the file was save on the computer.

Depends on what the situation is. Is the computer completely dead? If it won't power on, then you will have to remove the hard drive, and put it either into an enclosure or another computer to recover the data.

Well you can use system restore. It won't mess with your recent documents, but if it's a registry file it will recover it.

There are tons of recovery softwares out there. Question is what happened to crete the loss. Did you reformat or did you get sector corruptions?

if you jhave window xp you can do a window restore .. look in system tools if 98 dont think you can
