Graphite pencils, a variety of hardness/softness for regular pencil drawings. Colored Pencils, for color drawings, prismacolors are great for blending. Use a Panasonic electric pencil sharpener on them so that you don't constantly lose the "lead". It took me a while and a lot of wasted "lead" to find the perfect pencil sharpener.

China Markers are what I like to draw with. They amke a fast mark and they have a cool string on the side so you don't have to use a pencil sharpener.

first off i would like to welcome you to yahoo answers...youll soon notice first hand how addictive it becomes...
as for your question i, being an artist myself, much prefer mechanical pencils over anything else.
this is because of the fine detail they allow and convenience of never having to sharpen them...also the excellent erasers they have...
also the lines are very consistant never changing in size and for me at least allow more control in the variance of shading... than persay a regular graphite pencil...
anyway its really a personal opinion to the medium you choose to do your artwork with... i reccomend experimenting with different types and drawing styles and seeing which you like best...
-if you want i have a drawing on my 360 page done in mechanical pencil... and at myspace.com i have a few more in my groups .... youll have to search for them though--- ambidextrous artists or
exceeding human potential.
