Propain shouldnt do that, there may be something on the burner. If its a new grill light it set it to high and let it burn in for about an half hour to clean it self. Turn it off and open the lid wipe off the inside surfaces and if you have cast iron grates season them with a shortining before you cook on them next.

clean the grill.

raise the grill

adjust the gas temperature.

maybe you need new stones for the grill (you are not putting charcoal in it I hope)

If all else fails -- time for a new grill.

Clean your grill. Get some grill cleaner and the supermarket, disconnect everything and wash it down, untill all remains are gone.

Unless you mean you're burning your meat and its getting charred.

It needs a new regulator. It's letting too much fuel in and it's not burning completely thus the soot. They're cheap and easy to install. You can get them anywhere. Probably cheaper at Menards.

to me.. it sounds like the air damper (down below where the propane goes in) is closed and not allowing a proper mixture of air and propane it has to be wide open.
