Travelling by train preferably late evening and overnight journey is best option if travelling by surface transport. However, during peak time you may not be getting reservation by train, then a lot of Volvo 2x2 coaches are operating on this route, they are quite comfortable comparing ordinary/semi delux coaches; you can travel by such coaches.

Also air journey has become very competitive. Between Mumbai and Bangalore, scores of flights are available throughout the day. You can think of this option as well.

In India Travelling by train is always better. Buses do not always go by highways and you may have some rough ride due to some potholes.
But yah! If the distances are short, like 100-120 kms or so bus s better, cos you don`t need to worry about train delays and reservation.
