depends what you call a long time. days, weeks, months or years. A battery will stay for days, or weeks, but after that you will need to recharge the battery. It should be Ok once you recharge. If you allow a battery to sit often, then you should buy a battery tender slow charger. Whenever you have no plans for the battery, hook up the tender and it will keep the battery fully charged for months, maybe up to a year depending on the original condition of your battery.
