I have to laugh how the jocks, welsh, Irish always want England to lose, and most of the rest of the World. Funny how nearly everyone wants to come to England to play as well.

As a scot you are hoping England will lose because:
Your country has never done any good at football. You will say oh we beat you in 19 such and such a year, or that you qualified for 5 World cups in a row (and did jack sh** in all of them) but really you have achieved nothing. You might then say oh but look at our small population - and thats ok - Denmark won the European Championships and have got further than you in World Cups as an example to counter that. Your 2 best clubs are full of non scots......you are bored that Scotland are not in the World Cup.....you are jealous.....

Just a few reasons. I always support Sotland and the home countries when playing in tournaments - maybe the scots as fellow Brits should try the same.

England may not win the World Cup - but you have to be there to have a chance and we are!

I'd bet any money that if your country was a neighbour to Portugal you would hate them and cheer on England. Scotland is lucky it only has one neighbour - imagine if you had to put up with 4 or 5? I'm sure individuals like you would have exploded from hatred by now.

Look at the world situation - practically every country has fought their neighbouring country at some time or other. It's nothing new or special.

I know England will give Portugal a good try next weekend. It's going to be tough, as hinted by their game against the Dutch the Portuguese are warriors, but hey those footie players get paid enough might as well get the money's worth out of them!

So...hows about an original question?

good question, why are you hoping and praying that england lose? i'm english and i'll cheer on the scots, welsh and northern irish when they're in almost any sporting competition as we're all part of the uk - we're all british. we're not being arrogant, we're being proud! when else are we ever allowed to be? you can happily plaster your country in st andrew's flags and nobody would bat an eyelid but if we do the same with st george's flags here we're racist or arrogant or both. this is the only time we're ever allowed to be proud of who we are.

by this pathetic attitude you become a stereotype and don't do your country any favours. next time the scottish curling teams are in action (arguably the best teams in the world) i'll still be supporting them and for now i'm supporting england, but allow me to give you some advice, if you don't want to see england progress, stop watching.

I'm sorry to say that as long as there are people with such an attitude living in any country in the British Isles, loyalty, pride and patriotism don't have much of a chance. While England may not be your home any more than Scotland is mine I will always suppport any one of our countries and its countrymen on principle. This is sport, not racism...and just look at the way Portugal played. You'd want to support them over your neighbour? Oh dear, I'd dread my first ever holiday to Scotland in the autumn if yours was the sort of attitude I'd have to expect. Fortunately I know this not to be the case, I have Scots friends living nearby who have been cheering on, as one actually said, 'our' team. Unfortunately I don't think we've an igloos chance in hell of reaching the quarter finals against such a dirty team. Of course we have to boast about '66, it's hardly likely to happen again, is it?! If you lived in other countries who won the Cup once you'd find they do just the same, so please don't think us arrogant, it's human nature the world over to live off past successes.

(Either way I'll be very pleased to remove the flags and stickers from my car but my wee grandson refuses to go in it unless I leave them there til the bitter end!)

As an Englishman, I have to say, I don't think England stand a chance.
They've had a relatively easy run (Swedens the best they've faced so far), and the competition ahead of them is on another level. Portugal, Holland, Argentina, Brazil or Spain could easily take the current England team to town. Its an unavoidable fact.

The Scots are so jealous and bigoted.I take it as a complement that they cheer on the opposition as it proves they acknowledge how good England are.In England if Scotland are in a competition most of us cheer them on.is that arrogance? We even have Alan Hanson giving his comments on the game, you would not get an English person allowed to do that in Scotland! So who then is arrogant?Come on England.

Watching Portugal tonight I think England will have a hard time. I've never seen such a messy, scrappy game, it was dirty football. I know lots of scots Pat O who have no qualms about supporting England. Without exception they accuse their fellow scots of petty jealousy. It's so childish. I alwys support the home teams if my country's not in it.

You probably just don't want to be hearing about England winning the World Cup, or even their group, for the next 40 years like we have had to about 1966 for the last 40 years.
Every football commentary, of every tournament, cup final etc.
40 years is enough already.

Oi, don't be like that. not all of us are arrogant - we generally leave that to the Welsh and yes, I'm qualified to say that as I'm married to a Welshman who feels like you do. And our chances against Portugal are greatly improved, due to several Portugese players being booked by card happy ref. So ask again next Saturday evening.
