You're going to have to do a thorough cleaning. First, dust everything in the house before you vacuum. Use a good duster/cleaner and a dry cloth. Don't forget the light bulbs. Get a hepa filter for the vacuum cleaner. Have the carpet cleaned professionally, cause that's where the majority of your dust is coming from. Or, you can get rid of the carpet which is even better. Cats: cats can be bathed and brushed, which will be necessary to keep the dander out of the house. Also, have your furniture vacuumed and cleaned. Take out all the nick knacks that gather dust; do away with mini-blinds and anything on the windows that's gathering dust. Throw away old pillows, and any down blankets. Use natural fibers that can be washed on beds. Change out your air conditioner filters to hepa types, or just clean out the filters and get the dust out of the units if you have window units. If you have a fire place, clean it out and block it up till winter. Dust will accumulate over door frames and ceiling fans. I know it all sounds like a lot of stuff to do, but I'll bet once you get it all done, you're home will be almost dustfree and you'll be breathing better. After it's done, just maintain by regular dusting and vacuuming. As for the kids, but them to work cleaning up and getting rid of teddy bears and anything that holds dust or dander. OH..and if you live on or near a dirt road, forget it! You'll never get rid of the dust, but you can contain it. Good luck.

Encase your body and your kids bodies with plastic and put the cats outside!!
Seriously though, there is a new type of system where it pulls out the dust that floats in the air. There is also that $300+ item that sells on TV.
There is no way to totally eliminate dust. Our own bodies create it on a daily basis. Showering more often could help.

I have two dogs, two cats, three grandsons.
I can guarantee the only way to eliminate the dust is to eliminate the cats, dogs, and kids!
Maybe eliminate the carpets, go with tile or hardwood until the kids grow up. It is one less source of frustration in a world that we cannot control .
Less time vacuuming means more time to spent with the kids!

Clean the house first really well with vacuuming and dust cloths. Then, get good air cleaners (Amcor makes a nice one) for each room and clean the filters often. They will not totally eliminate dust but they help a good deal.

Spray the kids and cats with Endust and the dust will cling to them. Wash them out every few days.
