I can partly understand europeans buying american car because of their comfort and luxury, but a japanese car? They are made for considerably shorter humen, the quality of the product is no way near european one, their models all lookalike other, the EU-board tax raises the price 7%, and one of the essential reasons: the jobs and benefits of buyingdecision are given to people on the other side of the world, not to own area.
So:why on earth a japanese car in Europe?

In fact, hardly anybody buys a US car in Europe - only very few models are asked at all! Even here in Switzerland without own car production, the US cars have a market share of perhaps 2% (well, I'm driving a 2005 Mustang GT as second car).
Japanese cars are attractive because of their high reliability - and they do have some very innovative or well-designed products as well. The cars are usually better equipped than comparable German cars, where everything is paid extra.
The price level is similar compared to a German car - on French cars one usually would get much more discount.

Ok, first off, reliability issues with american vs. japanese cars were present only in the eighties. Newer american cars can easily surpass 200K miles with no difficulty. I'm not sure what japanese car you've thought was small, but I've been in both some japanese sports cars, as well as the sedans, and I found them just as roomy as the american counterparts. In fact, when you consider that mazda and ford make nearly identical cars, as with dodge and mitsubishi. I've also heard of chevrolet and toyota teaming up on a few vehicle designs. Japanese cars really have no significant difference these days than their american counterparts. As for european cars, on the other hand, they are much more expensive to get parts for, but the quality far surpasses american or japanese standards. I've driven my mom's 2004 Mini Cooper S, and the room in the front seats is incredible. A friend of mine that is 6'10" was able to drive it with ease. The car has never given us a bit of trouble, and is one of the most fun cars to drive. However, it takes about $40 every time I change oil in it with materials alone. Similarily, I've owned both japanese and american cars and have had great luck with both of them. As for the looks, for example, compare the early 90s plymouth laser, mitsubishi eclipse, and eagle talon. Both eagle and plymouth are american companies, but the car is identical in every shape and mechanical aspect as their mitsubishi counterpart. Just my .02

Europeans are massively into the hothatch concept. They love little go-fasts...no matter the brand or from which country it was imported. Japanese cars have great upgrade options, and replacement parts are on the whole cheap and widely available.
Not to mention, those little Japanese imports get about 30 miles to the gallon a piece...something that looks quite attractive, especially to the people in Britain who are paying USD $6.00 a gallon for gas.

Well I know one example and that would be the Skyline. You can ship a Skyline to Europe and they are from Japan and are quite popular with the European folks so that would be one reason.
