Loosen the tension. The fabric puckers because the tension is too tight. Cheap thread can break without anything being wrong because of weak spots.

Lower tension one notch at a time and change your thread to one of the German or Swiss brands. Or to a heavier gage thread. They are more durable and dependable than the all cotton American made ones. Sorry USA it has been that way for a very long time.
