Many reasons. One because of the life they have chosen, that puts them always in the public eye with so many unreal expectations placed upon them. They can't live normal lives and therefore have a normal relationship. Also being famous as they are they aren't like normal people who get real expectations about life and romance because they live it everyday. These folks like many more live in a real fantacy world and when things happen that aren't perfect they are not as equipped to handle them because things are so public. Also remember that there is always a prettier girl or a better looking guy in life and being in the positions that they are they get hit on all the time by people that are beautiful and very desirable and temptations being what they are it's just very difficult to keep a steady relationship going and being jealous as you can't help but be.

Because they were having problems like any other newly wed and instead of working them out amongst eachother they talked to their so called "friends". Now Nick is laid up with Jessica's former "best friend". I would say that Jessies' friend added fuel to the fires in their marraige. They did not comunnicate with one another and so now they have to pay for that with their marraige ending.

They let outside influences determine how they were with each other. Her father got involved in their life too much and Jess let him. When you get married that's your priority. People need to learn that fact and understand that marriage is a commitment. You can't just be committed to making it work when it's easy to do so you have to keep it up when it becomes hard too. That's life. They took the easy route and gave up. Seemed easier to fight each other and have their marriage fall apart then fight the world to keep it together.

Nick eventually got sick of her idiocy and immaturity.
Also, with their show and television specials, the media and tabloids focused a lot of attention on them. That could've strained their relationship as well.
