It has to be run from a live CD or flash drive, unless you can tell me how to get an OS boot menu without messing up windows xp. I currently have Knoppix.

Best is always subjective. There are MANY distributions available - I once saw a list of over 150 bootable linux distros. Further, if you want to add another hard drive to your computer (easier than repartitioning), you can install just about any major distribution as the boot loaders included will create a menu to allow you to boot to Windows or Linux with ease. Another option you might want to consider is getting VMware or Virtual PC which will allow you run a "virtual" computer on Windows where you can then install Linux and run both at the same time.

VMWare Server beta is supposedly free right now; both products have trials.

If you're new to linux, most people recommend Unbuntu, Mandriva, Fedora, or Suse.
