Fatigue.

When I was in the Air Force, I worked the 3rd shift and the only problem I had was sleeping. Though I normally can sleep great during the day any other time, but when I was on third shift I had a bad insomnia problem. At the time I was also dealing with depression and I think that it also made my depression a bit worse than normal. My doctor put me on a sleeping pill (but it used to be an old antidepressant so it wasn't addictive for me) and an additional antidepressant and that work GREAT for me!

Over time I think that off balance of day and night can play with your mind because people naturally want to get up and go to the sleep as the sun rises and sets (it's an animal thing). But some people are more nocturnal and the 3rd shift works great for them. It really depends on the type of person you are!

I am naturally nocturnal, so third shift is great for me. If I get a full night's sleep and wake up in the early morning, I feel worse than if I get a half night's sleep and wake up at 2 in the afternoon. It just depends on your body clock. I was even that way as a kid (school just about killed me).

The only health problems are temporary and will resolve themselves over time. If you like third shift, enjoy it. Working second or third shift actually makes it easier to find a job, because most people want day shift to be home with their kids in the evening.

Beyond the aggravation of trying to sleep while the rest of the world is awake, and trying to keep it dark enough so the sun doesn't bother you, I don't know of any.

I worked 3rd shift at my local Wal-Mart for a time--and beyond the odd hours I kept (10pm to 7 am work, then woke up around 2 something in the afternoon), I didn't have any troubles. Made it nice in the summer for my walk--as it wasn't boiling hot yet, though winter was a bit chilly at times.

As far as I know, though, no real health risks to speak of.

Health risk? I dont belive there is any, I have a few friends that work that shift, one of them has done it for over 30 years and he is healthy as a horse. Like most things in life it just takes a bit of getting used to. I have never heard of anyone being ill long term working that shift, lots of people dont like it for many resons, one bieing yer working when yer body is used to sleeping during them hours. Like I said, if you can get used to it, you may like it..

I worked 3rd shift for a long time. The first 3 months was difficult due to sleep and eating time adjustment. I've been doing it for 4 years and my health is fine. Just as long as you stick to your schedule. I've known some people who didn't and their health wasn't good (lack of sleep, etc).

If you're getting enough sleep during the day, eventually your body clock will adjust. Otherwise, give some serious thought to switching to first or at least second shift.

If you are able to sleep during daylight hours, there are no risks associated with prolonged 3rd shift work.
