Unlike Dolly the sheep, cloned fruit flies are a product of embryo genetic material, not from an adult genome. It is generally thought to be easier to clone this way. Even so, it still takes about 800 transfers to produce the five fly copies. Even then, there are usually several point mutations that don't evolve the fly into a healthy life form.
