My suggestion, get a wireless router. It will plug into your desktop and then you can access files and your high speed modem and printer from your laptop without having to worry about cables or anything.

That is the system I have a home with 2 desktops and 3 laptops.

Ethernet nics? Not sure what you mean... but you left out a lot of info... do you have a wireless modem? If not, ya ain't gonna connect save thru a cable on the laptop. If it says a network cable is unplugged - well on which puter? Sigh, ok n/m just go to your device mgr and disable that unplugged one if you're not using it - the mssg will keep appearing until you do. With what you've said here, that's the best I can answer.
