I took a Cultural anthropology class once and we had an assignment that I tweaked a little to determine something similar to this. Our assignment was to observe a public place and record people, actions, discussions, everything. My twist was to go to a public place with niqab (I only wear hejab), while my partner recorded reactions. We chose Barnes & Noble.
The results were that younger people had more knowledge and were more accepting than their elders. Some were talking about the different types of covering, while some went about as if I was just another reader who looked like them. Though I got the same reaction from many adults middle aged and older, the majority gave stares, mean looks and whispered among themselves. Some couldn't wait to get as far away as possible, lol. Children loved it and smiled or gave a slight confused look but only briefly. Oh, and one day in the grocery store with hejab, one little boy told me I looked like Mary (too cute!!).
Gives you hope for our youth and our future.

Currently, there is a common resentment and distrust for anyone appearing Islamic, due to the Muslim extremists being the vast majority of terrorists in the world. Females wearing hejabs should expect to be harassed and possibly assaulted out of vigilante ignorance. It's not right, but it's most likely...

The question is, why would anyone want to wear a shroud all day long? If you research the history and reasoning behind women wearing those things, you will find that it's just one more method of oppression and slavery for women. That would be like asking blacks to wear leg irons.
Let's stop perpetuating the muslim practices; they're based on enslaving people instead of making them free.

Well I'm an American and I think they would be uncomfortable but in some ways I think it looks better than having to look at some ones butt trying to fit in a size 5 when they should be wearing a size 10. Or having their belly hanging over their belt buckle.

I think the tradition of women covering their entire bodies is so the elements doesn't make their skin more course and unattractive, like the men's.
Then the men can have a woman at home that is pleasing to their touch. Those guys are smart !

hejab or the covering of the hair is not only in muslim religion. if you payed attention nuns in churches cover their hair and people who go to church also wear a tiny scarf to cover their hair so in Christianity they also cover their hair as well as Jews. but i think Americans see any woman wearing a hijab as a terrorist!!

I think all religions with all their stupid traditions are idiotic. You dont have to go thru all that crap. Just be a good person. Nobody on earth should tell another and/or make stupid rules that you have to abide by and if you don't somehow that makes you a bad person. What a bunch of hogwash

That's fine if they're in the Middle East. Don't wear that in Detroit, though. This is America. You need to adapt. I wouldn't wear flip-flops and hawaiian shirts in Tokyo.

I think that you have the right to wear what you like. You may find it more comfortable to try to blend in and wear something that may not cause people (with closed minds) to react. Overall wear whatever you like.
