It is a rationale I hear often.

No argument in that war is evil. But is it necessary?..if so, when is it not necessary.

gimpalomg,

you are rather presumptuous.

YOU DON'T KNOW HOW THE ATTAKS ON THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AFFECTED ME.

YOU DON'T KNOW THAT NYC IS MY HOMETOWN.

YOU DON'T KNOW THAT I LOST LOVED ONES IN THAT ATTACK.

Did you know that? I can gurantee you that you did not!!

Now..back to the point at hand.

As a citizen of this world, I take much notice to armed conflicts that happen globally.

I unlike you, am not so self-centerd as to think that a question about war is a GENERAL question and not a LOADED question pertaining to the U.S. presence in Iraq.

Azzhole.
....there sure are some goofy bastards with internet connections these days.

Let me correct myself here!!!

I unlike you, am not so self-centerd as to think that a question about war is a LOADED question pertaining to the U.S. presence in Iraq, rather than a general one.

first of all war is not evil, okay let me rephrase war is evil if it is to kill and murder innocent but if war is declared to stop evil for instance Hitler majorty of the world will agree that hitler was evil yes? But if it wasn't the wars he would still have his way... what I am trying to say is war is not evil if it is fought for the right reasons, for freedom, for the innocent, and against evil to stop evil i might add something later on to this but for now this is it. gtg

No, war should always be the last choice, not the first choice. Since we all know now that Iraq was planned long before Saddam was told to leave, it seems it has always been the first choice of some who make lots of Money from War. Only a fool would think Democracy is a gift to be given, it's not, never has been. Democracy must be won by the blood of those who really want it, not our service peoples blood. Iraq had nothing to do with Sept. 11th. and Bin laden is alive and well in Afghanistan. I lost loved ones in NY. Killing 300,000 civilians in Iraq will not bring our loved ones back now will it? No Terrorist would dare face any American or face a Marine like my SON. They do their dirty work behind our backs just like they did in Nam.
In the end Iran will control Iraq no matter how many die in Bu$hs war. Iraqis have been polled, they hate Democracy, they prefer a Islamic republic like Iran. The civil war in Iraq will last another ten years and all sides want control of the oil and Money in Iraq. Powel has said, "that his speech to the UN" was a black mark on his record", he also told many he wanted a exit plan". Powel Paid the price for his honesty. One thing for sure Republicans love sending others off to fight and die in Iraq. Republicans also love the record cash they make from Defense Contractors.
Republicans love war as long as they don't go.
BTW, Check out the Democracy in Korea and Nam. We lost 58,000 in Nam Nation building.. Both North Dictators were evil and still are evil.

From your question I would guess you already have an answer, and that answer in NO. No war is justified. It is evil and we should give every tin horned dictator anything they want.

Would you still be asking this question if all your children and husband were killed when the second tower fell. Oh and one more thing, a piece of the building fell on you leaving you in a body cast for a year and completely paralyzed there after.

So to answer your question yes, sometimes war is necessary. And this is one of those times.

Necessary evil is a contradiction in terms. It's just a wormy way of saying that the ends sometimes justify terrible and atrocious means.

Is war "necessary"? Good question. I would say that self defence is necessary. I would argue that the state (which carries out the war) is unncessary. However, in practical terms, it might be necessary to defend oneself through the mechanism of state power.

Thus, there might be incidents where war is necessary and just.

Look up Catholic Just war theory:

War is a necessary evil, when if comes to defending a value,a belief, or just defending yourself or others from harm. War is just down right evil when peoples lives are at stake for economic or territorial gain, so when wars are fought for those reasons it would deem to be unnecessary to those who have to fight it. So yes wars are a necessary evil. War against the American Indians was evil and not necessary. War against Japan and Germany during World War II was necessary.

eh... I don't know if it's necessary the majority of the time... unless there is a violent aggressor that takes over other countries... or maybe even mass genocide... which Iraq did do both those things like 15 OR MORE YEARS AGO!

If it wasn't necessary 15 years ago, it shouldn't be necessary now...

Darfur was a much more imminent need a the time of the attack... maybe we will go in there 15 years late too?

War, i.e., violence, is necessary to stop aggression when reason and civility has failed to deter the aggressor. A people of professed pacifism will inevitably be annihilated or assimilated in to the aggressor culture.

War is not necessary until all peaceful means of deterrence have been exhausted. For example, I found it irrational, and immoral, for the U.S.A. to threaten war against Iraq, all the while buying oil from them under the guise of the "oil for food program".

Prior to military engagement, complete economic boycotts must be utilized against potential enemies. When the citizens of the aggressor nation began to starve, they will demand from their leader some level of conformity with the demands of the opposing force(s).

Sometimes. WW1/WW2 were necessary, the current war is not. War is a part of humanity. We are a destructive species.
