I think the loud sound is soothing to the baby, reminding them of womb sounds. My second son would only go to sleep in the swing with the hoover on for a time. It made my life difficult, but like everything else it passed. Good luck!

Hoover Noises

that was the only way my son would settle down when he was an infant if he got very upset about something. I have heard that when babies get upset and start crying really hard they don't hear very much obviously, if they hear something constant over the noise of themselves it will snap them out of it in some way.

I don't totally understand how it works, and honestly I don't care how or why it works, I just care that it works and it works well.

He was afraid of the noise of the vacuum for a while then did a 180 and loves it now, he wants to play with the vacuum, he has actually ridden on the vacuum a couple times, while it was not running though. He rides on suit cases as well. I have a set of pullman type suit cases with the extending handle and wheels on the bottom. I fill up the biggest suit case with laundry for a trip to the cleaners and he will hang onto it no matter how far I have to walk. He has lasted from an outside cleaners on the main floor of an apt building all the way up to the 3rd floor and into the apt before I stopped, then he hopped off only because I stopped.

No babies like hoover noises! My friend used to get all her children to sleep by running the hoover. It acts like white noise and is somehow soothing to babies! He is not scared otherwise he wouldn't sleep! The thought of doing housework and the hoovering has the same effect on me!

My son also went to sleep when I hoovered but not being particularly house proud I taped the sound and played it whenever I needed to

Your vacuum is creating what is called "white noise". Babies often fall asleep when they have some kind of background noise. I personally used a radio in my son's room when he was a baby to provide some background noise for him to sleep to and it works really well. You can also create white noise by placing an electric fan in their room or by turning a radio on to a "nonexistant" station and turning the volume veyr low so you have a low static noise. It sounds crazy, but it's the same principle as the vacuum cleaner. I think one reason this helps babies to sleep is that it drowns out other noises that might startle them awake. I used the radio in my son's room for this reason since we lived in a very loud neighborhood. Trust me, if your son was scared by the vacuum cleaner, he would *not* be falling asleep.

No I don't think he is scared , and not sure how to answer your question but if it helps I have put my infant asleep by the sound of a Hair Dryer . She is now almost a year old and I have been doing it since she was 4 months old but I only do it when she is fighting sleep . I dont want to blow up my hair dryer LOL .

No, he's not scared. When he was inside you he could hear your heart beating and your breathing and talking. The noise of the hoover reminds him of being in utero and it's comforting to him. That's why he falls asleep....because he's relaxed.

My boys used to fall asleep when I set their strollers next to the washer and dryer. Apparently my innards sound like that....

apprantly the noise the hoover makes sounds like the noise of when the baby was in your womb and it comforts him, nothing to worry about

No he's not scared ..... it's perfectly normal.

In fact you can even buy CD's now with white noise tracks from hoovers, washing machines, dishwashers etc because it has such a calming effect!
