Rules of buying a new laptop:
1. Buy a major brand so that you know you can get support for it if there's a problem.
2. Buy it with a 3 year warranty - when they fail, not all the components can be easily replaced - especially the screen. The warranty is insurance... and a VERY good investment.

Rules of buying any computer today:
MINIMUM 512 MB of RAM. 256 can do, but will slow you down. given the cost, 512 should really be considered the minimum amount. This if for any computer running Windows XP.

For your described purposes, you might want to consider e-bay - but beware few places on ebay will offer a lengthy warranty and fewer still will be easily found 2.5 years from now when you have a problem.

I think the cheap one is right for you...

For regularly typing and internet browsing right? You can choose like Dell Latitude with Celeron processor or Pentium M, 256 MB and 40 GB of HDD is good enough for your needs...

The price is about $500 to 700$
