May be it's due to Spyware or a virus. If you use internet frequently and often visit unsecure websites spyware and adware is the reason for computer slowdown.Do two things
1.If you have a antivirus software, use it and thoroughly scan your system.
2.Using a spyware detector software like spyware doctor scan your system again.
After scanning spyware doctor will list spyware found on your computer.Remove them.
If above two doesn't work then it must be a hardware problem.

Defragment and do a disk check (click the 'thorough' and 'correct errors'). A dialogue box will appear that it will be scheduled the next time the p.c. is switched on. If you have a lot of time to spare, restart your computer and the check will start. It may take up to an hour to complete but well worth it.

1) Goto download.com get AVGfree antivirus.
2) Disable some unused programs which run when you boot up.
3) Upgrade your memory
4) Run system cleanup and Defragment your hard drive
5) Remove unused programs to free up Hard drive space. A full Hard drive will really slow a machine down.
(might be time to burn those mp3's to a couple cd's and delete them from the computer)

Defragmenting your hard drive may help.
You can do this by going into your control panel and clicking on Performance and Maitainance. It may take hours, but its worth it.
Getting more RAM for your PC may help, too. RAM is relativly cheap, easy to buy and install.
Lastly, delete big unessecary files to free up hard drive space.
If all that fails, you need to buy a new computer.
