This sounds to me like adware running on start up. They are a bit like TSR (terminate and stay resident programs) in that they are resident on startup and run in the background. Anti virus software is one way of combating it. I use Grisoft AVG which is free and updates on a regular basis. It can be downloaded from Ref 1. This edition is free because it is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only

TSR programs tend to hang your computer. I had a weathercheck program which once ran on my computer and slowed it down. I have since removed it and my computer runs a lot quicker now.

On the odd occassion I have removed references to programs from my registry and then deleted the offending EXE file on restart. Some of the most stubborn viruses are removed in this way. But you must be very careful when editing the registry.

Hope this has been of some use to you.

Probably infected with a virus, trojan or spyware
Make sure your antivirus and spyware programs are up to date. Run a FULL scan and see if there are any threats on your system.

Have you installed any hardware? Network adapter..etc?

Go to control panel click on administrative tools, event viewer
Click on application and system and look for errors.
What are those errors? It may point you in the right direction or what is causing the hang.

you could have a virus, but i would say that i think you have some spyware thats crawled on to your system
i would use spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/,this gets rid of all kinds of nasty spyware, and adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/,will get rid of any adware thats on your computer
a virus check would,nt go a miss, but i still say its spyware, also why not use the free program "windows defender"avalible from http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx,this will track any harmful changes on your system
you can test your internet speed by conducting a "ping" test,to do this go to start>programs>accesories>command prompt>then where the cursor is,you should type(exactly like this) ping www.bbc.co.uk and then press return, your computer will then send four packages to the website(you can use any website),and will calculate a average round trip, for example when i do this i get a average of 18ms(milliseconds)
if you are getting anything higher than 50ms you should contact your internet service provider so your line can be tested
why not try borrowing a friends router so you can see if its a hardware problem
good luck

Could be a virus, but I've noticed mine has slowed down from new anti-virus software. I guess it takes resources just to check it!
