There is a whole mentality associated with the "house" slave and the "field" slave.

Since the field slave worked in the field, he was usually darker than the house slave and treated poorly. They worked incredibly hard and got beaten far more severely. Being a "field" slave was arduous.

The "house" slave was lighter-skinned, more refined and well-spoken. Since he/she lived in the house with the master, he/she received better food and clothing allotments. The "house" slave rarely got beat and reviewed his/her assignment to be a privilege. Often times the "house" slaves were the illegitimate children of the master.

There was animosity between the "house" and "field" slaves for obvious reasons.

uh....let's see....um, my guess would be that house slaves were slaves that worked in the HOUSE and...um....field slaves were slaves that work in the, uh, FIELD. Of course, that's only a guess.
