First and second gear on my C Class Mercedes are grating. When I go into higher gears it calms down - anyone had this problem and can they tell me whether or not this is going to cost me a new gearbox?!

I hate to break it to you. You have a mercedes. You probably have the cash to replace it.

you dont say how old the car is, i work as an NVQ assessor for DCUK (merc) and have been a mechanic and college lecturer in mechanics for a total of 23 years, i would advise you to check your warrenty and see if the car is still covered, if it is you ought to take it to your local dealers as the warrenty system they operate is very good, if its grating in two gears then it could be that the oil level has in the past dropped down, again there are various warrenty recalls on the gearbox's of mercs which can lead to the problem you describe

Don't take any chances - have it checked out by a mechanic before it gets any worse.

Sounds like you're gonna have to rebuild your transmission.
